2040:Future

My alarm starts buzzing, it must be time to get up for class. As i roll out of bed my tv turns on automatically with the weather forcast for the day. It looks like it will be a lovely sunny day, so I went to my closet and decided to wear shorts and my favorite tank top. The new style had just came out, it was a shirt that changed colors with your mood, just like a mood ring would.

I walked into the kitchen and there was no longer a variety of cooking appliances, those were replaced several years ago. Now I only had one microwave like appliance, but instead of heating up whatever you had in your pantry, you would punch in whatever you felt like eating for the day. Within moments a fresh cooked and healthy meal would teleport into the microwave like box and it was ready to eat. This morning I chose a delicious omelet.

Once I was ready for class I teleported to my classroom and sat down for my lecture. After class a group of my friends and I teleported back to my house we sat around and talked while watching one of our favorite bands hollographic concerts right in my living room. After grubbing out on some lunch we all hopped into my car to go to the beach, it was too nice of a day to just teleport there.

Cars are pretty cool these days, they have no wheels and hover above the ground. While there were still some old cars that drove on the roads, the majority of people had hovercars. It makes traveling time much faster because we can just head straight towards our destination and not take the winding roads. Oh, and accidents... they don't happen. The new cars have sensors around them that stop when another object comes too close. It is pretty convenient.

After a long day I came home and my room and I discussed my plans for tomorrow as I got ready for bed. He helps remind me of homework assignments, appointments, and plans I have made for the week. As I got into bed I told my alarm what time I wanted to get up in the morning and I fell right asleep.

Rethinking Virtual Communities

Written by Howard Rheingold, the article "Rethinking Virtual Communities" talks about computer technology, internet, and its social communities. He shared information on several different online website communities and the difference they make in individuals lives. In addition, Rheingold gave several different articles from different online communities sharing the discussions, questions, and ideas they had to solve issues throughout America. I picked the discussion question four to talk about today. In his conclusion, Rheingold spoke of the hope he had for strong internet virtual communities. By working together and using the tools that the internet provides we may have the capacity to change our futures. But if we fail to work together, work to try to change the way tools are used online, and respect people we will never make a difference in reviving democracy. We must have our minds set on what we want, learn as much as we can about it, and pursue our goals to make our communities, online and offline, a better place.

The Time Traveler's Wife romance movie trailer is made up of a mix of video clips from the movie used to describe the plot. Along with the dramatic backgroud music, this movie trailer pulls you in with a longing to see how things end up. It starts of by introducing the main male (Henry) and female (Clare) characters then showing how a man disapears into thin air. It continues to describe how Henry time travels without control and shows video clips with audio explaining the hardships of a relationship with someone who leaves uncontrollably for long periods of times and how they fight to keep things strong as their world falls around them.

Less Privacy is Good for Us(and You). Question 2

Amitai Etzioni's article, "Less Privacy is Good for Us (and You), depicts a very interesting discussion for and against privacy and its issues. Privacy is very important. Never-the-less, is privacy something so important as to where a person is harming others by covering up something of their own? What do I think? No. Although privacy protects and is typically a good thing for many people, it also has its downfalls. An example from Etzioni's article is the HIV testing of infants. Privacy laws may prevent mothers from having their child tested for HIV because it violates the privacy of the mother who passed the disease onto her child. Etzioni wrote, "To save the lives of their children, they must be tested at delivery and treated even if this entails a violation of mothers' privacy". If the disease is known in advance the mother can help ward of the HIV disease from passing onto her child. Other examples in this article talk about the ups and downs of biometrics, background checks for jobs, and search warrants. These topics are made to help protect the privacy of the individual, yet also protect the affected population. Privacy is a very touchy topic. We may never all agree on what is too far, however, I believe we all agree that privacy may be infringed upon under reasonable situations.

"My Home": The Story of Immokalee

After watching the two Untold Stories about Immokalee I felt like I had really learned a lot of interesting facts about Immokalee and more about the history of the people I have lived and grew up around my entire life. Ever since I was a little kid I always found the Seminole Indians a topic of interest, so naturally I found these two videos rather intriguing. I especially found the first video, "Outpost of Opportunity" the most interesting. The Seminoles early regular lives relied on the alligators in the swamps of Immokalee, which many preferred to call "My Home". Later when the swamps were drained they began a new era of agriculture. Hispanics and Europeans traveled from numerous locations to work on the growing farms once the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad traveled through Immokalee in 1921. Things continued to change and the city began to grow in between the two World Wars. Not long after World War II the economy of Immokalee took an even greater turn as oil was discovered and the Seminole Indian Casino was built.
Times for the native Seminole Indians sure have changed over the years but they have adapted very well to make the best out of what is given to them. In one of the videos a man spoke of how thankful he was for his job and while looking back after a hard days work on the farm he felt a great sense of accomplishment. I am not sure what is in store for Immokalee as it becomes more known and industrialized, but one thing I feel confident about is that the people living there will continue working hard and will find a way to adjust to the new things to come just as they have in the past.

Identity as an American

I am a white American woman with heritage from all around the world. I am a Christian who strongly believes in and loves God. My great-grandparents owned homesteads here in Fort Myers. I am a third generation Florida Cracker and was born and raised in Fort Myers, FL. I believe that family is the most important thing on earth. I believe that everyone in a community should help each other and build one another up. I think that everyone needs support; families support one another, families support other families, communities support the cities, cities support our country, and countries support the world. I am American.
